Lawmakers Are Rising to Defend Trans Kids Following Trump’s Election Victory

“‘I will always stand with trans people and the entire LGBTQ+ community. This Congresswoman sees you and loves you,’ said Rep. Ayanna Pressley.”

It’s clear that a potential second term for Donald Trump would have devastating consequences for queer and trans Americans.

The accused rapist and his party have been outspoken in their opposition to trans rights. According to data from Ad Impact, reported by Washington Post’s Casey Parks on November 5, Republicans spent nearly $215 million on anti-trans ads during the 2024 election cycle. On Trump’s 2024 campaign website, he pledged to redefine gender at the federal level, recognizing only male and female as assigned at birth, and to push for a nationwide ban on gender-affirming care for minors.

To make matters worse, Democrats like New York Rep. Tom Suozzi and Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton chose to scapegoat trans people for their party’s failure to win the presidency, House, or Senate.

Despite the troubling implications of the 2024 elections, many Democratic politicians have made it clear that supporting the trans community is a top priority, regardless of what the next four years bring.

From calling out transphobia within their own party to working to enshrine LGBTQ+ protections at the state level, these leaders are standing up for trans rights.

Gov. JB Pritzker and State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (Illinois)
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker reaffirmed his commitment to LGBTQ+ Americans in a tweet, declaring that Illinois would remain “a refuge for those whose rights are denied elsewhere.”

Pritzker went on to specifically highlight the communities he’s standing with, including “those seeking reproductive healthcare, immigrants working hard for a better life, LGBTQ+ Americans looking for protection, and people with disabilities whose civil and human rights are under attack.

Meanwhile, Illinois State Rep. Kelly Cassidy recently told the Chicago Sun-Times that a coalition of state lawmakers has been working to protect access to trans and reproductive healthcare since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022. Now, this coalition is examining Project 2025 to assess what additional protections they can put in place in the near future.

Cassidy mentioned that one key issue the coalition hopes to address before the fall legislative session concludes is the use of geolocators to track individuals who access healthcare facilities.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (California)

On November 7, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a special session of the California Legislature, set to begin on December 2. This session will focus on strengthening California’s legal resources to safeguard climate action, civil rights, immigrant families, and reproductive freedom in response to Trump’s reelection.

According to a release from Newsom’s office, this special session is a direct response to the public statements and proposals made by President-elect Trump and his advisors, as well as actions taken during his first term. These efforts, Newsom’s office warns, could threaten essential freedoms and individual rights, including women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights.

In 2023, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed nine LGBTQ+ rights bills into law in just a few days, despite vetoing a bill that would have provided stronger protections for trans children in custody and visitation cases. Earlier this year, he also signed the Support Academic Future and Educators for Today’s Youth Act (SAFETY Act), which prohibits schools from implementing policies that require staff to out students to their parents. The law also mandates the California Department of Education to create resources for LGBTQ+ students and their families.

Salem City Councilor Kyle Davis (Massachusetts)
Salem, Massachusetts City Councilor Kyle Davis called out Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton in a series of X posts after Moulton made transphobic remarks to the New York Times.

In an interview with the Times on November 7, Moulton stated, “I have two little girls, I don’t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete. But as a Democrat, I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.”

The following day, Davis responded strongly on X, not holding back in his critique.

‘Resign @sethmoulton,’” he tweeted on November 8. Shortly after, he followed up with a second post, stating, “I’m not looking for an apology from @sethmoulton, I’m looking for a resignation.

On November 11, Davis posted a gif of a woman named Jenn holding the progress Pride flag, with the caption, ‘@Sethmoulton represents this district. He does not represent me.’

The city councilor went on to question the timing of Moulton’s remarks in an interview with the Boston Globe last week.

“With all the things Trump has said about trans people, this is a time when the trans community is feeling a lot of fear,” Davis said.

State Senator Jamie Eldridge (Massachusetts)
Massachusetts Senator Jamie Eldridge also spoke out against Moulton’s transphobic comments. On November 8, Eldridge took to X to share a link to a Boston Globe article highlighting local Democrats who were condemning Moulton’s remarks.

As a legislator fighting for #LGBTQ rights—from marriage equality to #transgender rights to the #ParentageAct—and with pride in Massachusetts being a welcoming state, I condemn Cong. Moulton’s comments on transgender athletes,” Eldridge wrote. “@MassDems do not abandon our values.”

Rep. Becca Balint (Vermont)
Vermont Rep. Becca Balint succinctly summed up the sentiment in a November 9 X post, writing, “Leave trans kids alone.

When Balint was elected in 2022, she made history as the first openly LGBTQ+ person and the first woman elected to Congress from Vermont.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts)
Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley reinforced her commitment to the trans and LGBTQ+ communities in a November 10 X post, reaffirming her unwavering support.

This election wasn’t the first time we’ve seen the trans community scapegoated and dehumanized, but know this: I will always stand with trans people and the entire LGBTQ+ community,” she wrote. “This Congresswoman sees you and loves you.

Attorney General Rob Bonta (California)
On November 5, California Attorney General Rob Bonta—who, last year, sued a school district in his state to block a policy requiring teachers to out trans students to their parents—told Cal Matters that his office is already preparing legal challenges to the incoming Trump administration. Bonta’s team has preemptively drafted briefs and tested arguments to counter policies they anticipate Trump will push during his second term, including those that could undermine civil rights for trans youth.

“Unfortunately, it’s a long list [of issues],” the attorney general said. “We are and have been for months developing strategies for all of those things.”

At least 36 transgender individuals have been killed in the U.S. this year, with half of the victims being Black transgender women

A new report sheds light on the “epidemic of violence” targeting transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.

This article addresses violence against transgender individuals and includes references to graphic content.

The epidemic of fatal violence against transgender individuals in the United States shows no signs of slowing down, with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) documenting at least 36 killings over the past year. Half of these victims, including Honee Daniels, Kassim Omar, Redd, Vanity Williams, and others, were Black trans women.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), which has been tracking the murders of transgender individuals since 2013, released its 2024 report on the “Epidemic of Violence Against the Transgender & Gender-Expansive Community in the U.S.” on Tuesday. The report covers deaths between the day after Trans Day of Remembrance 2023 (November 21, 2023) and November 20, 2024. HRC highlighted that a disproportionate number of victims in the past year were young people of color—75% of all victims were people of color, and 54.3% were under the age of 35. Among the youngest victims was 14-year-old Pauly Likens, a trans girl who was tragically killed and dismembered in her Pennsylvania hometown in June, marking the youngest recorded death. Other young trans victims included 18-year-old Jazzlyn Johnson and 17-year-old Tayy Dior Thomas.

Tori Cooper, Director of Community Engagement for the Transgender Justice Initiative at HRC, stated that transphobia is fueled by disinformation, rhetoric, and ideologies that treat the transgender community as political tools, ignoring their right to live free from fear of harm or death. She pointed out the “disturbing reality” that half of the victims were Black trans women, a reflection of the ways in which racism, misogynoir, sexism, transphobia, and other societal issues disproportionately affect the trans community.

Cooper concluded, “In spite of these tragedies, I choose to remember the beauty brought to the world by those victims who left this earth far too soon and will celebrate their memories by continuing to fight for them through the Trans Justice Initiative’s advocacy and our leadership development work.”

While the statistics in the report are bleak, there was one slightly positive development. According to the report, 41.7% of victims were initially misgendered by the media or law enforcement. While still a significant number, this is the lowest percentage the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has recorded since it began tracking this data in 2013. However, the report also highlights some alarming “firsts.” For the first time since 2013, transgender individuals were killed in Minnesota, Utah, and Nevada.

The HRC notes that the report is released at a critical moment for the transgender community in the U.S. Last June, for the first time in its history, the organization declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ Americans, citing the unprecedented number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in state legislatures across the country that year. The report also reflects the broader political climate, with former President Donald Trump, who ran on a platform that scapegoated trans people and pledged to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth, recently re-elected. His administration has appointed numerous anti-trans figures, such as Elon Musk, JD Vance, and Matt Gaetz, to key positions in the White House.

Neo-Nazi stabbed a gay man 28 times until he died. He’s going away for life

The victim’s mother expressed that her son was forced to “die while staring at an Atomwaffen mask.”

A member of a neo-Nazi group, whose computer was filled with anti-gay and anti-Jewish propaganda, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for the brutal stabbing death of a gay and Jewish former high school classmate.

Samuel Lincoln Woodward, 26, from Newport Beach, California, received a life sentence without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him in July of first-degree murder with a hate crime enhancement in the killing of Blaze Bernstein. Bernstein, 19, was home from college on winter break in 2018 when he was murdered.

Judge Kimberly Menninger stated that Woodward, then 21, was driven by “pure hate and rage” due to the victim’s “sexual orientation and religious beliefs,” describing the two former schoolmates as being on “opposite ends of a culture war.”

Woodward had reconnected with Bernstein on a gay dating app and arranged to meet while Bernstein was home on holiday break in January. The University of Pennsylvania student met Woodward in a public park, where prosecutors say Woodward stabbed him 28 times before burying him in a shallow grave.

The next day, Bernstein’s parents reported him missing and began searching through his online activity for clues. They found that he had been in contact with Woodward, a former classmate at Orange County School of the Arts. Woodward later told the Bernsteins that he had met their son but claimed Bernstein had walked off into the park with an unknown person and that he never saw him again, according to the district attorney’s office.

Bernstein’s body was found a week later in the park, exposed after heavy rains.

Investigators found Bernstein’s blood on a skull mask in Woodward’s possession, linked to Atomwaffen, a neo-Nazi group to which Woodward had pledged allegiance. The group advocates for using violence to collapse society and government.

During the three-week trial in July, Woodward’s attorney argued that the killing was a spontaneous, irrational act. Woodward testified that he felt “anger like nothing I had ever felt in my whole life,” and described repeatedly stabbing Bernstein, saying he did not remember how many times he struck him. Woodward claimed he was provoked into the attack when Bernstein allegedly took a photo of his genitals, and said that he was in a haze after smoking cannabis at the park when he discovered Bernstein was touching him.

At the sentencing, prosecutors reminded the judge that Woodward was a former Eagle Scout who may have killed Bernstein to impress Atomwaffen and prove he wasn’t gay.

Bernstein’s mother said at the sentencing that she was haunted by the thought that her son was forced “to die looking at an Atomwaffen mask.”

Donald Trump is already influencing other countries to intensify their crackdowns on homosexuality

A leading lawmaker in Uzbekistan referenced Trump’s electoral victory as a reason to push for a ban on LGBTQ+ “propaganda.

The leader of a party in Uzbekistan’s government coalition has announced that they are drafting a law to ban LGBTQ+ “propaganda” in the country, crediting Donald Trump for inspiring the move.

Alisher Qodirov, head of the Milliy Tiklanish (National Revival) party, which shares control of the lower chamber of Uzbekistan’s parliament with the Liberal Democrats, shared the news on Telegram. He revealed that his party is working on a draft law aimed at prohibiting discussions about LGBTQ+ issues.

In his post, Qodirov referenced a statement from Ivanka Trump, where she endorsed her father’s opposition to “inappropriate sexual content” and “transgender ideology” in schools. This rhetoric, which falsely claims that schools are teaching children to be transgender or exposing them to gay sexual content, has been used in some U.S. states and school districts to justify bans on any mention of LGBTQ+ issues.

Qodirov wrote, “The change in the center of the disease is very good,” adding that his party is working on a law to ban any form of LGBTQ+ “propaganda.”

Homosexuality remains illegal in Uzbekistan, a Muslim-majority nation, and can lead to up to three years in prison. The country, along with Turkmenistan, is one of the only two post-Soviet states to criminalize homosexuality. There are no legal protections against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination or hate crimes in Uzbekistan.

A 2021 Human Rights Watch report highlighted the severe abuse faced by gay and bisexual men in the country, who are targeted by both vigilante groups and law enforcement. Many LGBTQ+ activists have been forced to abandon public efforts and operate “completely underground” due to the threat of violence and harassment.

One activist shared their experience with HRW, explaining that they had to suspend most of their projects due to the intense risks involved. Five men told the organization they were forced to pay bribes of up to $1,000 to prevent the police from exposing their sexual orientation to their families or the public.

Elon Musk’s Trans Daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, Calls Him a “Grubby Control Freak”

This blog is originally appeared at Them

Musk, who is said to have spent over $130 million supporting Trump’s election campaign, misgendered his daughter on X and attributed her transition to the “woke mind virus.”

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the estranged trans daughter of billionaire Elon Musk, has opened up about her consideration of leaving the U.S. following Donald Trump’s election victory. She also set the record straight once more after Musk falsely claimed she had been “killed by the woke mind virus” due to her transition.

On November 6, the day after the U.S. presidential election, Wilson took to the Meta-owned platform Threads, writing, “I’ve thought this for a while, but yesterday confirmed it for me. I don’t see my future being in the United States.”

She continued, “Even if [Trump] is only in office for 4 years, even if the anti-trans regulations magically don’t happen, the people who willingly voted for this are not going anywhere anytime soon.”

A second Trump presidency could have a devastating impact on LGBTQ+ Americans. On his 2024 campaign website, Trump pledged to enact a federal ban on gender-affirming care for minors and to redefine gender at the federal level, recognizing only male and female as assigned at birth. These promises come amid the Republican party’s ongoing use of anti-trans rhetoric. According to data from Ad Impact, cited by Washington Post reporter Casey Parks on November 5, Republicans spent nearly $215 million on anti-trans TV ads during the 2024 election cycle.

Meanwhile, Musk’s post-election comments included a response to a New York Post tweet about Wilson’s desire to leave the U.S., where he misgendered her and wrote, “The woke mind virus killed my son.”

The billionaire has spent much of this year aligning himself with Trump. According to CNBC, Musk has invested at least $130 million in pro-Trump campaign efforts, in addition to his frequent endorsements of the convicted felon on X. In his personal time, Musk has become notorious for lashing out against the existence of trans people, often dragging his daughter, Wilson, into his recent anti-trans rants.

Musk previously revived the claim that Wilson was “killed by the woke mind virus” during a July 22 appearance on Jordan B. Peterson’s podcast (and in subsequent X posts), attributing her transition to the so-called virus.

Wilson responded to Musk’s latest claim on November 8 via Threads, writing, “So you’re still going with the sob-story about how ‘woe is me, my child was infected by something-or-other and that’s totally the only reason why they hate me. Just don’t… please don’t look into it, god forbid I’m anything but the victim in every scenario imaginable 😥.”

She continued, “Did anyone actually believe this? It’s just tired, it’s overdone, it’s cliché. I’m just bored, honestly, like is this really the best you could come up with?”

Wilson went on to theorize that the reason Musk’s post struck a nerve was that “you’re mad that you finally don’t have power over someone.”

“You’re just upset because at the end of the day everyone around you knows you as a delusional and grubby little control freak who hasn’t matured as a person for 38 years,” she added. “However, last time I checked that’s not my fucking problem.”

Wilson previously filed a name and gender change petition in 2022, citing both her gender identity and the fact that she “no longer live[d] or wish[ed] to be related to [her] biological father in any way, shape, or form.” In a July interview with NBC News, she described Musk as an absent father who harassed her as a child for being feminine.

12 College Students Face Hate Crime Charges After “Targeted” Attack on Gay Man via Grindr

Law enforcement reviewed cell phone footage of the assault.

Maryland police have arrested 12 Salisbury University students accused of using Grindr to target and assault a gay man due to his sexuality in October.

According to a press release from the Salisbury Police Department (SPD), the assault took place at an off-campus apartment complex for college students. Local outlet WBOC reports that, based on charging documents, the victim was initially contacted on Grindr by an individual — later identified by police as 18-year-old Zachary Leinemann — who falsely claimed to be 16 years old, the legal age of consent in Maryland.

WBOC says that, per the police, Leinemann then lured the victim to the off-campus apartment complex on October 15 under the pretense of sex. The victim told police that upon arrival, he was ambushed by about 15 men and was forced to sit on a chair in the middle of the room while they kicked, punched, and spit on him for several minutes while calling him derogatory names.

CBS News reports that a video of the assault shows one of the suspects hitting a victim with a cookie sheet.

“Why are you getting up? Make one more move, and I swear I’m going to punch the **** out of you, bro,” one of the suspects yells in the video. “Get back! Lay down. Lay down. Lay down, or I’m going to punch the **** out of you!”

Although the victim allegedly attempted to leave multiple times, he was thrown to the floor and warned by his attackers to tell no one what had happened. After seeking medical attention, the victim discovered that he had a broken rib and sustained bruising all over his body as a result of the assault.

According to the Salisbury Police Department, seven of the 12 individuals are associated with Salisbury University’s chapter of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The students have been identified as 20-year-old Ryder Baker; 18-year-old Bennan Aird; 20-year-old Riley Brister; 19-year-old Cruz Cespedes; 20-year-old Dylan Earp; 19-year-old Elijah Johnson; and 18-year-old Zachary Leinemann.

Police identified the other five individuals involved as 18-year-old Cameron Guy; 19-year-old Jacob Howard; 21-year-old Eric Sinclair; 19-year-old Patrick Gutierrez; and 20-year-old Dylan Pietuszka.

The suspects have been charged with assault, false imprisonment, reckless endangerment, and related hate crime offenses.

In a statement posted to Salisbury University’s X account, the school announced that the 12 students, along with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter, have been placed on suspension. Meanwhile, Sigma Alpha Epsilon has expelled the members allegedly involved in the attack, according to CBS News.

In a separate statement, Salisbury University President Dr. Carolyn R. Lepre condemned the students’ actions, saying, “Acts of violence toward LGBTQ+ and Ally communities are not only destructive but at odds with the principles of community, respect, and belonging that bind us together as a university.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with additional information about the attack or similar incidents is urged to contact the Salisbury Police Department at 410-548-3165. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Solvers at 410-548-1776.

Vance proposes that upper- and middle-class students may adopt transgender identities to gain an advantage in college admissions, while also suggesting that Trump could attract the “normal gay guy vote

This blog is originally appeared at CNN Politics

In a recent interview, Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance suggested that White upper- and middle-class students might be motivated to identify as transgender to improve their chances of getting into prestigious colleges.

“Think about the incentives,” Vance told podcast host Joe Rogan. “If you’re a middle-class or upper-middle-class White parent, and the only thing you care about is whether your child gets into Harvard or Yale, the path to that has gotten a lot harder for many upper-middle-class kids. But one way they can engage with the DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) system is by becoming trans. Is there a dynamic where, if you identify as trans, it becomes a way to reject your White privilege?”

Vance argued that in today’s “hyper-woke” culture, choosing to identify as nonbinary or gender nonconforming could serve as a social signal. “That’s the only way available in the current mindset to reject your White privilege,” he added.

However, studies show that transgender students, especially those facing discrimination and lack of support in earlier education, are actually less likely to have access to higher education, let alone be admitted to Ivy League schools. This stands in stark contrast to Vance’s suggestion that adopting a trans identity might provide a competitive advantage for college admissions.

J.D. Vance recently sat down for an extensive interview with Joe Rogan, just days after former President Donald Trump did the same. Trump’s nearly three-hour appearance followed years of Rogan stating he would not host the former president, and it came in the final stretch of the presidential campaign. Both Trump and Vance have used podcasts, rallies, and other platforms to make their closing arguments to voters ahead of the election.

While Vice President Kamala Harris has yet to appear on Rogan’s podcast, the host expressed on X (formerly Twitter) that he “really hopes” to make it happen, noting that Harris’s campaign has not ruled out the possibility of an appearance.

During the interview, Vance spoke about a friend he described as a “gay Reagan Democrat,” someone who rejects progressive ideologies. He suggested that the Trump-Vance ticket could appeal to what he called the “normal gay guy vote.”

“Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if me and Trump won just the normal gay guy vote,” Vance said. “They just want to be left the hell alone.”

Vance also shared a conversation he had with a “very conservative” woman from Mississippi during a congressional delegation trip to the Paris Air Show. According to Vance, she expressed the view that Paris was more conservative than some U.S. cities. He recounted her shock at seeing a man in a miniskirt, describing it as an example of behavior she considered inappropriate.

“Oh my God, this is not empowerment. This is not respecting lifestyle choices. We’re letting a grown man walk around in a mini skirt in broad daylight,” Vance said. “If that’s what you’re doing, you’re a pervert. And I want, I want all of us to say, whatever your political persuasion, just say, ‘No, that’s weird, right?’ You’re not allowed to walk down the street and flash children in the middle of the world’s or the America’s biggest city.”

Vance also touched on the issue of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, stating that while most Americans are open-minded about “lifestyle choices,” he believes this crosses a line. He then speculated that Democrats may want to keep Americans in “poor health and overweight” to promote more liberal politics.

“Have you seen all these studies that basically connect testosterone levels in young men with conservative politics?” Vance asked. “Maybe that’s what’s going on. Maybe that’s why the Democrats want us all to be, you know, poor health and overweight because that means we’re going to be – no, it means we’re going to be more liberal.”

Vance’s campaign did not provide clarification on which studies he was referencing.

In other parts of the interview, Vance confirmed that Chinese hackers had targeted both his and Trump’s phone data, exploiting vulnerabilities in U.S. telecommunications networks.

“Maybe they got some stuff. We’ll find out eventually. I try not to worry too much about sh*t I can’t control,” Vance said. “Luckily, I’m a pretty boring guy, so I don’t think that they got really anything.” He added that he takes precautions, using encrypted messaging apps like Signal and iMessage to safeguard his communications.

CNN previously reported that Chinese hackers had targeted individuals affiliated with the Trump-Vance and Harris-Walz campaigns as part of a larger cyber-espionage effort aimed at high-profile U.S. targets. These hackers sought to gain access to phone communications of current and former senior U.S. officials, a key objective for foreign intelligence agencies.

During his conversation with Joe Rogan, Vance, who said Trump’s phone had also likely been compromised, explained how the hackers accessed their devices. According to Vance, the hackers used a vulnerability in the telecommunications infrastructure developed after the Patriot Act.

“What I’ve been told is that this Chinese hacker group used the backdoor telecom infrastructure… and that’s how they got into the Verizon network and AT&T network,” Vance said.

Although U.S. law enforcement’s ability to conduct court-authorized surveillance on telecom networks predates the Patriot Act, the post-9/11 laws strengthened these capabilities and deepened the relationship between law enforcement agencies and telecom companies.

The Chinese government has denied any involvement in hacking U.S. telecom systems. The cybersecurity community has identified the group responsible for the breach as “Salt Typhoon,” describing them as a sophisticated and elusive threat. Investigations into the hacks are ongoing.

Vance joked about the group’s name, saying, “It’s a pretty badass name. If they have anything on me, I can’t be too pissed off at them. At least they named themselves Salt Typhoon.”

In another segment of the interview, Vance addressed the potential legal consequences surrounding out-of-state abortions in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. He expressed his opposition to the idea of women being prosecuted for seeking abortions in states where the procedure remains legal, even if they live in a state where abortion is restricted.

“I don’t like the idea, to be clear, of people getting arrested for freely moving around the country,” Vance told Rogan.

In his conversation with Joe Rogan, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance addressed the issue of women traveling across state lines to obtain abortions, noting that while he had heard the idea framed as a “threat,” he had not seen it actively enforced.

As CNN previously reported, Vance had expressed support in 2022 for the idea of a national ban on abortion, viewing it as a necessary measure to prevent women from crossing state borders to seek abortions in states where the procedure remains legal.

Rogan brought up the notion that the debate over abortion had evolved, pointing out that for many, the reversal of Roe v. Wade was a dramatic shift, particularly with “religious men” now playing a prominent role in dictating women’s reproductive choices.

“Yeah. No, look, I mean, again, I understand that,” Vance responded, acknowledging the concerns raised by abortion rights advocates. “I understand the pushback against that, but I think, like with so many other issues, you can go too far, and it becomes about celebrating something that, at the very best, if you grant every argument of the pro-choice side, is a neutral thing—not something to be celebrated.”

Rogan countered, “I think there’s very few people that are celebrating, though.”

Vance then explained that while he recognizes the “autonomy value” in the pro-choice argument—that men should not be dictating what women do with their bodies—he emphasized that the value of life must also be considered in the debate.

Ted Cruz wrongly labels two cisgender teenage girls as “boys” in a misguided attempt to attack transgender athletes

This blog is originally appeared at LGBTQ Nation

Ted Cruz exploited the images of two minors without their parents’ consent, misrepresenting them as “boys in girls’ sports.” This misleading tactic serves his narrative while disregarding basic respect for privacy and accuracy.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz’s relentless pursuit of transgender targets in a series of hateful attack ads aimed at his Democratic opponent, Colin Allred, has backfired. Cruz has landed in controversy after using the images of two cisgender teenage girls without their parents’ permission. The girls appear in at least two fear-mongering ads that attack both the trans community and Allred, where they are pictured alongside former University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas and CeCé Telfer, a Jamaican-born sprinter and the first openly transgender woman to win an NCAA title. The use of their likenesses has sparked outrage from the girls’ parents and their high school.

In one of the ads, a photo of the two teens at an Oregon high school track and field event is shown, while a narrator ominously declares, “Boys in girls’ sports.” This misleading and inflammatory statement further fuels the attack on transgender athletes, misrepresenting the two girls and distorting the issue.

A representative from the Beaverton School District has demanded that the ads be removed “from any and all distribution platforms,” following an email sent to the Cruz campaign and shared with The Hill. The district’s representative emphasized that the two athletes pictured are minors and made clear that neither the family, the school, nor the district had given permission for the photo to be used.

“It is alarming that your campaign would have produced, distributed, or promoted this ad with false information, especially with minor children involved,” the representative wrote.

The photo originally appeared in an April report by Central Oregon Daily News, which covered a controversy involving a transgender high school athlete in the state. In response, a Cruz campaign spokesperson claimed the image depicted “a female athlete who spoke out against boys playing in girls’ sports after participating in a track meet where a biological male beat female athletes and impacted individual and team medal results.” However, the spokesperson did not address the misleading labeling of the two young women as “trans boys.”

Despite the campaign’s focus on anti-trans rhetoric, Cruz and his fellow MAGA Republicans continue to push this divisive messaging, even as they ignore voters’ top priorities, such as the economy and healthcare. This strategy echoes the failure of 2022, when the GOP’s massive ad campaign centered on similar anti-trans tropes and failed to produce the expected “red wave” in the midterm elections.

Democratic nominee Colin Allred, who is locked in a tight race with Cruz, has condemned the senator’s anti-trans attack ads as a “disgusting, false attack,” accusing Cruz of trying to “divide Texans.” Josh Stewart, a spokesperson for Allred, added, “Cruz will say anything to distract from his dangerous abortion ban that is putting women’s lives at risk, his efforts to raise the retirement age for Social Security and Medicare, and his shameful escape to Cancun during a deadly winter storm.”

A principal was dismissed for offering an “LGBTQ+ Kindness” class, and now his community is rallying in his defense

This blog is originally appeared at LGBTQ Nation.

The educator aimed to create a safe space for LGBTQ+ students, but some parents labeled it “perverted.”

A middle school community in Virginia is pushing back after their principal was dismissed for launching an “LGBTQ+ Kindness” flex-time class designed to offer a safe space for LGBTQ+ students.

Dr. Jerry Putt, who had served as principal of Frederick County Middle School since 2017, was removed from his position following a contentious school board debate over his actions, according to The Winchester Gazette.

The controversy erupted during a Frederick County School Board meeting on Tuesday, where a conservative group of parents and board members argued that the “LGBTQ+ Kindness” class strayed from state-approved curricula and labeled it “inappropriate.”

The leader of the opposition to the class, Chris Davey, a Back Creek District resident, called the optional “LGBTQ+ Kindness” class “perverted.” He criticized Dr. Putt for offering the course without prior parental notice and brought his concerns to the school board, where he found support.

In response, the board issued a warning to school staff, stating that any “unsanctioned curriculum” additions would not be tolerated and could result in termination. Just two days later, the board made an example of Dr. Putt by removing him from his position.

On Thursday, the school community received a notice from district superintendent Dr. George Hummer announcing Dr. Putt’s removal, with no explanation given, and the appointment of an interim principal.

Wendy Werner, a former counselor at the school, called the decision “appalling” and criticized the parents at the meeting as “hateful and uninformed.” In response, she and other community members have launched a grassroots campaign to reinstate Dr. Putt, starting with an online petition that has already gathered nearly 1,300 signatures in the small town. The petition has become a platform for community members to speak out about what they view as a campaign of anti-LGBTQ+ hate by the board and certain parent groups.

Local resident Luke Mason called the school board’s decision misguided. “The principal is out because he created opportunities for ALL students during the school day, and that was ‘off script,’” Mason wrote, questioning whether other extracurricular activities, like the “four-wheeler club” or pep rallies, would face similar scrutiny.

Sonia Marfatia-Goode raised concerns about discrimination, pointing out that one parent wanted the LGBTQ+ flex-time class canceled but had no objection to other flex-time offerings. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the division was sued over this,” she warned, highlighting potential legal repercussions.

Marfatia-Goode also noted that the increasingly divisive atmosphere at recent school board meetings was having a negative impact on students. “Children pay attention, and they are finding out that if you don’t want something, you yell and yell until you get your way,” she wrote.

City offers $10,000 reward for reporting trans individuals using public restrooms

This marks the first instance of a city allowing individuals to sue trans people for using public restrooms.

The city of Odessa, Texas, has implemented a $10,000 bounty for anyone who reports a transgender person using a restroom that matches their gender identity, according to independent journalist Erin Reed.

Under this ordinance, individuals—excluding local and state government officials—are allowed to sue transgender people for using such facilities. The rewards for successful claims include “injunctive relief” to prevent further violations, nominal and compensatory damages if the plaintiff can prove harm, statutory damages of at least $10,000 per violation, as well as court costs and attorney’s fees.

While the bounty is set at a minimum of $10,000, there is no maximum limit on how much the reward can grow.

In addition to the bounty, Odessa’s ordinance includes criminal penalties for individuals who use restrooms that align with their gender identity. Those found in violation of the law can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500. Anyone who refuses to use a bathroom corresponding with what the city considers their biological sex—after being asked to leave by a building owner—could also face misdemeanor trespassing charges.

The law defines “biological sex” based on birth certificates, either the original or a corrected version in cases of clerical errors. This means that even if a transgender person has updated their birth certificate to reflect their gender identity, they could still be in violation of the ordinance if they use a bathroom that aligns with their gender.

There are no exceptions for disabled individuals who may be accompanied by someone of a different gender, and the law could potentially lead to lawsuits targeting people who are gender non-conforming or whose gender expression doesn’t fit societal norms.

Similar bathroom bans with criminal penalties have been enacted in states like Utah and Florida, while other states, like North Dakota, have laws without clear penalties or enforcement mechanisms. Erin Reed compared Odessa’s bounty system to the anti-abortion bounty laws in Texas, where private citizens are empowered to sue anyone who aids in an abortion. This strategy shifts the responsibility of enforcement from government officials to private individuals, circumventing the usual legal processes.

Johnathan Gooch, communications director for Equality Texas, condemned the ordinance, telling the Texas Tribune, “It’s a very aggressive way to alienate trans people from public life, and I think it is counter to the spirit of friendship that most Texans embody.”

He added, “It enables vigilantes to target anyone they don’t think matches the gender expression they expect to see in the bathroom, and that is truly insane.”
